Use
Edit
The Point Defense(PD) section is a mission section for Destroyers and Cruisers notable for an extremely large number of small weapon mounts that provide weapons coverage in 360 degrees on both horizontal and vertical planes. Both Destroyer and Cruiser varients can be deployed to great effect against Silicoids, as the large number of point defense weapons prove to be very effective at swatting away swarms of drones. As Silicoids are cleared from the galaxy and the greatest threats prove to be enemy empires, this section takes on a more situational role. A few point defense ships can be attached to a fleet towards the bottom of the reinforcement queue, with access to several kinds of specialized point defense weapons in case the enemy chooses to invest heavily in Torpedoes, Drones, or Missiles in a specific engagement. Generally Destroyers suffice for this role, as Cruisers tend to be overkill both in volume of fire and command points tied up.
An alternative use of PD sections is to fight swarms of destroyers. A player who invests heavily in economic technologies and is pressured before he is ready will still have the economic capacity to produce a large number of destroyers very quickly. Before you have access to beams and phasers, you may need to rely on large numbers of small weapons in order to effectively combat these swarms. The PD section can be very useful for this.

Hiver
Edit
Hivers feature a rotating PD section on Destroyers and Cruisers, gauranteeing that even if an explosion rips the turrets off one side of the ship, the PD section will still be able to cover most angles most of the time.
Liir
Edit
The Liir PD sections feature multiple spindles with gun mounts protruding horizontally. This design is much better at picking small targets off nearby ships than it is at defending itself.

Zuul
Edit
The Zuul would much rather shoot at more interesting things than missiles and drones, and therefore outfit their PD Cruisers with a fair number of medium mounts.
